How long have you been in business?
10 years
How did you come up with the name of your company?
Anjali means offering. My husband, Kristinn and I had worked in the NY fashion industry for more than 30 years combined and we were burnt out from the never-ending pace. When we found Yoga, about 17 years ago, we started to ask some pretty deep questions of ourselves. Over the years, we concluded that we wanted to live more meaningful lives, where we felt connected to a more divine purpose. We combined our knowledge of fashion and our love of Yoga and Anjali was born. It’s the way that we offer our best to the world. Hopefully, connecting to people near and far all over the world.
What inspired you to start a sustainable activewear brand?
We knew that we wanted to exclusively manufacture in the USA. That in itself lowers our carbon footprint by a lot. We endeavor to live our lives with respect and harmony with nature in the way that we eat and the way we live our lives. Naturally we sought out Organic Cottons, Soy blends and Bamboo Blends, and eventually Poly/Spandex derived from recycled discarded plastic bottles. There is so much innovation going on in fabric sourcing these days that there really is no excuse to not be more sustainable.
What is your company’s mission?
When we started Anjali, there were very few companies in the activewear business. We started with designing clothing for an active lifestyle that didn’t look like you were wearing workout clothes. Comfort and fashion were our mission but we weren’t into the “I just came from the gym look”. Now there are so many activewear companies that we can sometimes feel lost in the crowd. Everyone is trying to out-design everyone else and stand out. We have always been more into a subtle more refined luxury that is only evident to you through quality, comfort and feel of fabrics. We like clothes that fit in everywhere without screaming for attention. Women and Men are busy and we want to support them by simplifying their lives.
Who is your customer?
My husband and I have always been the Anjali customer. We want clothing that is comfortable, functional, performance ready, fashionable and feels good to the touch. We want to be able to move from one scenario to another without feeling like we need to make an outfit change. We don’t like logos. We want to feel pulled together and neat throughout our day. We have active lives and once we get dressed in the morning, we don’t want to give our clothes another thought. We also like to be ready to strike a Yoga pose if we feel inspired to. There are so many people looking for exactly that out there.
What is something you wish people knew about sustainable fashion?
Sustainable fashion is now everywhere. It is not just Organic Cotton and recycled Polyester but also how and where it is produced/sourced, packaged, and shipped. We can all live more connected and meaningful lives by making sustainability a priority by doing our homework and supporting companies that are out there doing the work.
